NEW DELHI: He is the man who made us double over with laughter in Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama, and Phir Hera Pheri. But today, the man who brought joy to millions is in a very dark place. In a development that has left fans saddened, Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026.
The 54-year-old actor is currently serving a six-month prison sentence. For many, it’s hard to believe that the iconic “Chhota Pandit” is now behind bars. The reason? A long-standing Rs 9-crore cheque bounce case that has haunted him for 16 years.

How Rajpal Yadav’s Debt Began?
The nightmare for Rajpal Yadav started back in 2010. Like many successful actors, he wanted to try his hand at directing. He borrowed Rs 5 crore from a Delhi-based company, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, to fund his debut film, Ata Pata Laapata.

Unfortunately, the film was a major disaster at the box office. Rajpal Yadav could not recover the money to pay back the loan. Over the next decade and a half, the interest and penalties kept adding up. What started as a Rs 5 crore loan soon ballooned into a massive debt of nearly Rs 9 crore.

The Cheque Bounce Battle and Courtroom Drama
To settle the debt, Rajpal Yadav issued several cheques to the lender. However, these cheques were “dishonoured” (bounced) because there wasn’t enough money in his account. This led to a criminal case under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
In 2018, a court sentenced Rajpal Yadav and his wife to six months in jail. For years, the Delhi High Court stayed the sentence, giving the actor chance after chance to pay back the money in installments. However, on February 4, 2026, the court’s patience finally ran out.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that Rajpal Yadav had repeatedly breached his promises to the court. The judge made it clear:
“Leniency cannot be extended endlessly… The court cannot create special circumstances for anyone just because they belong to the film industry.”
‘I Have No Money’: Rajpal Yadav’s Emotional Breakdown
Moments before he walked into Tihar Jail, an emotional Rajpal Yadav broke down. His words to the media reflected a deep sense of despair and isolation.
“Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain (Sir, what can I do? I have no money),” he reportedly told the court. He added a heartbreaking realization about the film industry: “There are no friends here. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”
His statement went viral, sparking a massive conversation on social media about the financial struggles of actors who aren’t part of the “superstar” elite.
Sonu Sood and Others Step Up for Rajpal Yadav
While Rajpal Yadav felt alone, his surrender actually moved several of his colleagues to act. Sonu Sood, often called the “Messiah” of Bollywood, was the first to offer a hand.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sonu Sood wrote: “A small signing amount is not charity, it’s dignity. Rajpal Yadav will be part of my film. This is the moment for all of us to stand together.”
Even Tej Pratap Yadav announced a financial aid of Rs 11 lakh for the actor. Filmmaker Anees Bazmee also came out in support, stating that Rajpal Yadav is a simple man who likely got caught up in complex paperwork he didn’t fully understand.
Will Rajpal Yadav Return to the Screen?
The good news for fans is that Rajpal Yadav has not been “cancelled.” He has already finished shooting for several major projects. Once he completes his six-month term, he is set to appear in:
- Bhoot Bangla (with Akshay Kumar) – Releasing April 10, 2026.
- Welcome to the Jungle – Releasing June 2026.
Despite the bars and the debt, the industry seems ready to welcome back the man who made them laugh. For now, Rajpal Yadav is focused on serving his time and putting this 16-year-old legal nightmare behind him for good.
