New Delhi | January 8, 2026 – Being the captain of the Indian cricket team is often called the most prestigious job in the country, but as 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi recently discovered, it also comes with a side of “rotten luck” that would make even the most seasoned veterans weep.
In a moment that has now gone viral across social media, the makeshift skipper of India’s Under-19 team couldn’t hide his sheer disbelief as he lost his third straight coin toss against South Africa on Tuesday.

But while the coin seems to be his greatest enemy, his bat is clearly his best friend. Despite the toss curse, Suryavanshi led his “colts” to a crushing 233-run victory, securing a massive 3-0 whitewash against the Proteas.
Suryavanshi’s Viral Toss Reaction
At the Willowmoore Park in Benoni, the atmosphere was tense. After losing the first two tosses of the series, Suryavanshi walked out for the third Youth ODI hoping for a change in fortune. Instead, the coin landed in favor of South African captain Muhammad Bulbulia yet again.
The reaction was instant and heartbreakingly relatable. Suryavanshi didn’t just shrug it off; he buried his face in his hands in total despair. Even the match referee was seen exchanging a look with the officials that seemed to say, “Kid, there’s nothing I can do about this hat-trick!”

“I don’t think he could believe his luck,” one commentator noted as the footage of the young captain’s reaction began trending on X (formerly Twitter).
India’s Ongoing Toss Curse
If Suryavanshi is feeling down about his luck, he’s in good company. Some of India’s greatest leaders have suffered from the “wrong side of the coin” syndrome. MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul have all faced similar dry spells.
In fact, the senior Indian men’s team famously lost 20 tosses in a row recently, a streak so bad it defied the laws of probability.
Since the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad, India has won only 33 tosses out of 93 games. It seems that while Indian cricket is dominating the field, the coin remains firmly in the opposition’s pocket.

Suryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Century
If South Africa thought winning the toss gave them an advantage, they were sadly mistaken. Invited to bat first, Vaibhav Suryavanshi decided to take his frustration out on the white ball.
What followed was a batting masterclass that will be talked about for years. Suryavanshi didn’t just play; he destroyed the South African attack. He smashed a breathtaking 127 runs off just 74 deliveries, reaching his century in a mere 63 balls, making him the youngest captain in Youth ODI history to hit a ton.
He wasn’t alone in the carnage. His opening partner, Aaron George, matched him almost blow for blow, notching up a solid 118 off 106 balls.
Together, the duo put on a record-breaking 227-run opening stand, taking the Indian total to a monstrous 393/7 at the end of 50 overs.
| Match | Toss Result | Suryavanshi’s Score | Match Result |
| 1st Youth ODI | Lost | 12 Runs | India won by 25 runs (DLS) |
| 2nd Youth ODI | Lost | 68 Runs (24 balls) | India won by 8 wickets |
| 3rd Youth ODI | Lost | 127 Runs (74 balls) | India won by 233 runs |
South Africa Collapses in 233-Run Defeat
Chasing 394 was always going to be a mountain too high for the hosts. The Indian bowlers, led by Kishan Kumar Singh (3/15), were clinical from the start. South Africa’s top order crumbled like a house of cards, leaving them reeling at 50/5 within the first 11 overs.
Despite a small fightback from the middle order, the Proteas were eventually bundled out for 160 runs. Appropriately, it was Suryavanshi himself who took the final wicket of the match, sealing a 233-run victory and a perfect 3-0 series sweep.

What’s Next for the Young India Stars?
With this dominant performance, the India Under-19 team has sent a chilling warning to the rest of the world. They head into the Under-19 World Cup starting January 15 as the undisputed favourites.
As for Suryavanshi, he might want to practice his coin-calling skills before the tournament begins—but if he keeps batting like this, he won’t need a single ounce of luck.
