Where and When to Watch Haq?

You can stream ‘Haq’ on Netflix starting today, January 2, 2026. The film has a runtime of approximately 2 hours and 16 minutes, making it a perfect weekend watch for those who enjoy legal thrillers that actually have something to say.

What is the Storyline of Haq?

The film follows the journey of Shazia Bano (played by Yami Gautam), a simple, uneducated woman who finds herself at a crossroads when her husband, Advocate Mohammad Abbas Khan (played by Emraan Hashmi), brings home a second wife and abruptly ends their marriage through triple talaq.

What starts as a private heartbreak quickly escalates into a fierce national debate. Humiliated and left without a means of survival, Shazia refuses to be a victim. She takes her battle to the courtroom, demanding her “Haq” (right) to maintenance under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The twist? Her estranged husband is not just the man she’s fighting in her personal life—he is also the high-profile lawyer standing across from her in the courtroom. This high-stakes face-off between Yami and Emraan forms the electrifying emotional core of the film.

Is Haq Based on a Real Story?

While the characters are fictionalised, the film draws heavy inspiration from the landmark 1985 Shah Bano case. For the uninitiated, the real Shah Bano was a 62-year-old mother of five who fought a multi-year legal war against her husband, a wealthy advocate, for alimony.

The case famously went all the way to the Supreme Court, leading to a historic verdict that granted divorced Muslim women the right to maintenance. However, the ruling triggered massive political and religious upheaval, eventually leading to a change in the law by the then-government.

Haq captures the essence of this struggle, exploring the delicate balance between personal faith, religious laws, and the Indian Constitution.

Who are Cast in Haq?

Haq is being praised for its stellar ensemble cast. Yami Gautam Dhar, who has been on a winning streak with films like Article 370, delivers what many are calling her most vulnerable performance to date. She portrays Shazia with a “quiet steel” that makes you root for her from the very first frame.

Emraan Hashmi, on the other hand, surprises as the cold, calculating Abbas Khan. Moving away from his “serial kisser” or “action hero” tags, Emraan embraces the role of a man who uses the law as a shield for his own ego.

The supporting cast is equally strong. Sheeba Chaddha plays Bela Jain, Shazia’s fearless lawyer, who brings warmth and logic to the courtroom, whereas Danish Husain is seen as Shazia’s father; his performance adds a layer of heartbreak as a man watching his daughter fight a system stacked against her.

Haq Box Office Collection

Despite rave reviews from critics (many of whom gave it 3.5 or 4 stars), Haq had a quiet run at the box office. Released in November 2025, it faced stiff competition from big-budget blockbusters and ended its theatrical journey with an estimated ₹19.62 Crore in India and around ₹28.68 Crore worldwide.

However, industry experts believe Haq is the kind of “word-of-mouth” gem that will find its true audience on digital platforms. Much like 12th Fail or Laapataa Ladies, the move to Netflix is expected to give it the global visibility it deserves.

Will Shazia Bano win her fight for justice, or will the weight of tradition pull her down? Stream ‘Haq’ on Netflix now to find out!
